Emergency Dental Care

Dental emergencies can happen suddenly — and pain or swelling should never be ignored. Yokine Smiles Dental provides urgent dental assessments to help identify the cause, reduce discomfort where possible, and stabilise the issue safely.

What counts as a dental emergency?

You should contact us promptly if you have:

Location & Practice Information

  • Severe toothache or pain that worsens
  • Facial swelling or gum swelling
  • Pain when biting or chewing (possible cracked tooth / infection)
  • Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth with pain or sensitivity
  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Signs of infection (swelling, discharge, bad taste, feverish feeling)
  • Trauma to the mouth, teeth, or jaw

Important: If you have rapidly spreading swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek urgent medical care immediately (ED/000). 

What to do right now (first-aid guidance)

Severe toothache

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Use appropriate over-the-counter pain relief if safe for you (follow label directions)
  • Do not place aspirin on the gum/tooth (can burn tissue)

Swelling / suspected infection

  • Call us urgently
  • Apply a cold pack to the outside of the face in short intervals
  • Do not use heat on facial swelling
  • If you feel unwell, have fever, or swelling is spreading — seek urgent medical care

Broken / chipped tooth

  • Rinse mouth with warm water
  • Keep any fragments (if possible)
  • Avoid hard foods
  • Call for an assessment

Swelling / suspected infection

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root)
  • If dirty, rinse briefly with saline or milk (do not scrub)
  • If possible, gently place it back into the socket
  • If not possible, store it in milk or saline and come in immediately
  • Call us urgently — time matters

What happens at an emergency appointment?

Emergency visits are focused on:

  • Identifying the cause of the problem (exam + imaging if required)
  • Stabilising the tooth, infection risk, or trauma
  • Relieving pain where clinically possible
  • Explaining next steps clearly (options, costs, timelines)

If further treatment is required (e.g., root canal, crown, extraction), we will outline a plan and discuss what’s most appropriate for your situation.

  • Cracked teeth and fractured fillings
  • Broken crowns/bridges
  • Wisdom tooth pain and inflammation
  • Trauma-related tooth damage
  • Lost fillings
