First Visit: How We Start

Your first appointment is about understanding your oral health and your priorities.

We listen first

We begin by discussing:

  • What brought you in today
  • Any pain, sensitivity, swelling, or concerns
  • Your dental history and past experiences
  • Your goals (preventive, cosmetic, functional, urgent)
Medical history and safety check

We review your medical history and medications to ensure treatment is safe and appropriate. If you have any allergies, conditions, or recent surgeries, please tell our team.

Comprehensive dental assessment

Your dentist will complete an oral health assessment which may include:

  • Teeth and restorations (fillings, crowns, implants)
  • Gum health assessment (bleeding, inflammation, gum stability)
  • Bite and wear patterns (including grinding/clenching indicators)
  • Screening of oral tissues as part of a thorough mouth examination
  • Targeted checks for the area of concern if you’re in pain
X-rays or scans (only when clinically needed)

If imaging is required to confirm a diagnosis or plan treatment, we’ll explain:

  • Why it’s recommended
  • What it helps us see
  • How it influences your treatment options
We don’t recommend imaging unless it supports clinical decision-making.

Why Choose Yokine Smiles Dental

Clear Explanation Before Treatment

Clear Explanation Before Treatment

  • What we found
  • What it means for your oral health
  • What your options are (including conservative options where appropriate)
  • Expected outcomes and any relevant risks
  • Costs and the priority order of treatment

You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and decide what you’d like to do next.

If You’re Coming in With Pain

If you’re booking due to toothache, swelling, a cracked tooth, or urgent symptoms, the appointment is usually structured around:

  • Identifying the cause of pain
  • Stabilising the tooth or infection risk
  • Relieving discomfort where clinically possible
  • Outlining next steps clearly

If you have significant swelling, trauma, or rapidly worsening symptoms, call us as soon as possible for guidance and the next available appointment.

For Nervous or Anxious Patients

Many patients feel anxious about dental visits — we understand. Our approach is calm, paced, and respectful. We can help by:

  • Explaining each step before we do it
  • Offering breaks when needed
  • Using gentle techniques and effective local anaesthetic
  • Discussing comfort strategies and sedation options where clinically suitable

If you’re anxious, simply let us know when booking — we’ll adjust the appointment approach.

Ongoing Care: What Regular Visits Look Like

Routine dental visits are about prevention and early detection. Depending on your needs, ongoing care may include:

  • Periodic check-ups and gum monitoring
  • Early decay detection and restoration planning
  • Professional cleaning where appropriate
  • Wear and bite monitoring (including night grinding)
  • Tailored prevention advice based on your risk profile

We’ll recommend recall intervals based on your oral health — not a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Payments and Health Funds

We accept Visa, MasterCard and EFTPOS, and payment plan options may be available depending on treatment and circumstances. We work with major health funds and can assist with eligible benefits and schemes where applicable.

Before Your Appointment (Helpful Checklist)

To make your visit smoother, please bring:

  • Your health fund card (if applicable)
  • Any concession or eligibility documentation (if relevant)
  • A list of medications (or a photo of the labels)
  • Previous dental records or X-rays (if available — not essential)

If you have a specific concern, it helps to note:

  • What triggers the discomfort (cold, heat, biting, sweets)
  • How long it has been happening
  • Whether the pain is constant or intermittent
